Grad students are invited to a breakfast with Robin Leichenko and Bill Solecki, who are experts on climate impacts, vulnerability, and adaptation, especially in urban areas.
This will be an informal time where graduate students can interact with both speakers, including conversations around careers in the climate field. A light breakfast will be provided. Please RSVP by Wednesday, 2/20 to Niki vonHedemann (nvonhedemann@email.arizona.edu).
About the speakers:
Bill Solecki is professor of Geography at Hunter College, NY and former founding director of the CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities. His research focuses on urban environmental change, resilience, and adaptation transitions, and he has supported adaptation planning for the New York and New Jersey regions. He was a coordinating lead author for the U.S. National Climate Assessment urban chapter and for the IPCC Special Report on 1.5C. He will be speaking about “Climate Resiliency and Transformational Change in Cities” at SGD colloquium later on Friday. More information available at: http://www.geo.hunter.cuny.edu/people/fac/solecki.html.
Robin Leichenko is Professor and Chair of the Department of Geography at Rutgers University. She is also co-Director of the Rutgers Climate Institute. Robin’s recent research explores vulnerability and resilience to climate change within coastal and inland communities in New Jersey and New York. Robin has authored or co-authored three books and more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Her 2008 book Environmental Change and Globalization: Double Exposures (co-authored with Karen O’Brien), won the Meridian Book Award from the American Association of Geographers. Her latest book, Climate and Society: Transforming the Future (2019, co-authored with Karen O’Brien), shows that climate change is both a critical challenge for society but also an opening for transformation to a more sustainable and thriving world. Robin will be speaking on “Bringing equity into climate change adaptation planning: the case of New York” and her new book on climate and society at a brownbag lunch on Friday (2/22) as well.
